In Santoshi's Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani Ranbir plays the melancholy lover-boy hopelessly in love with the idea of being in love. The character was immortalized by Raj Kapoor in Mera Naam Joker and before him, Chaplin in City Lights. Ranbir in Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani plays Prem a true inheritor of the two imperishable heroes from the past. He is an innocent guy with a heart of gold. There will be distinct elements of Charlie Chaplin and Raj kapoor, but not too much though. Katrina Kaif plays a character that closely resembles what she is in real life. A little lost, a little out of it, credulous, artless and trusting, a girl who believes in the goodness of all things. The film requires her to be young and trendy. Apparently she was excited to do this role working with Ranbir kapoor.
